4 February 1957 – Meteor
On 4 Febuary 1957 a Gloster Meteor F.Mk.8 with serial I-93 (former RAF WF694) of the Royal Netherlands Air Force crashed into the IJsselmeer. Pilot Witman ejected the plane and landed in the IJsselmeer. He managed to climb into his rubber boat and waited for the rescue team to arrive.
Coincidentally Soesterberg AB was visited by a S-55 rescue helicopter which was immediately send to the crash site. The helicopter found the Dutch pilot and brought him back safely to his home base.
